Here is a wonderful ebonised and gilt wall cabinet with two gold ground painted panels depicting a Kingfisher and a Swallow, both birds swooping and darting over a summer river blooming with rushes and waterlillies.
This little cabinet really captures the whole ethos of the Aesthetic Movement, with paintings of nature lifting furniture out of the utilitarian and into works of art in their own right.
The cabinet comprises of two shelves with openwork sides, over a two door cupboard.
The wood has been ebonised, and bands of gilding run throughout to highlight the sides and structure of the cabinet, and it is on the two door panels that the paintings are found.
The cabinet is in an attractive condition and has clearly been well loved and cared for, but shows the surface wear that is to be expected with a piece of this age. The cabinet has two brass hanging hooks to fasten it to the wall - there is a key, but this no longer locks the cupboard doors, however they do stay closed without the need to be locked.
