Rare Late 18th Cent American Longcase Long Case Grandfather Clock

Description

A very smart longcase clock strongly attributed to Jacob Sargent of Springfield, Massachusetts.

The case is typical of American clocks of the period and made in cherry wood and with unusual fretwork decoration to the hood. A similar clock is shown illustrated in the Antique Market Report for May 1985 (see copy)

There is documentation (some included here) showing that this clock remained, until 1986, in the Sargent family. There is a very old label attached to the trunk door that states:

“This clock was the property of Stephen Nichols of Amesbury (now Merrimack), Mass. whose daughter married Robert Sargent also of Amesbury”

The case is of elegant slim proportions with fine reeded columns to the trunk and hood, each fitted with brass capitals. The hood has fretted decoration and 3 brass ball finials.

The 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell and has a very smart painted dial with two birds to the arch.

The case is in good condition and a lovely colour. The movement is a little dusty but in good working order and keeping good time.

The maximum dimensions are:

226cm (89") high excluding finials, plus 12cm (5")

26cm (10") deep
