Portico clocks are architectural timepieces originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, characterized by columns supporting a central movement in the style of a classical temple facade.

These clocks commonly feature carved alabaster or marble paired with gilt bronze mounts, enamel dials, and mechanical movements such as fusee or pendulum mechanisms.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-chased gilt bronze ornamentation, natural veining or patina on the stone, and period-correct movement constructions like fusee or wire-suspension pendulums.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to serve as a symmetrical focal point alongside contemporary ceramics or minimal artwork.

Clean the alabaster with a dry, soft cloth while avoiding water or chemical solvents, keep the gilt bronze free from moisture, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every five to seven years.
