FAQs

Originating in Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century, Satsuma ware evolved during the Meiji period (18681912) into decorative earthenware created primarily for export to Western markets.

Satsuma pieces are crafted from light earthenware featuring a fine crackle glaze, decorated using overglaze polychrome enamels and extensive gold leaf gilding.

Authentic items typically exhibit finely crazed ivory-coloured glazes, detailed hand-painted enamelwork, raised gold accents, and often feature Japanese maker marks painted on the base.

Position the piece as a standalone accent on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or within an open shelving display to complement modern and eclectic decorative schemes.

Dust gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or soft brush, avoiding water, harsh chemical detergents, or immersion to protect the delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
