Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire clock design emerged during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquity. These timepieces prominently feature neoclassical motifs such as winged figures, classical deities, laurel wreaths, and symmetrical compositions crafted from dark patinated bronze and gilt bronze.

Nineteeth-century French garnitures typically combined gilt bronze (ormolu) and dark patinated bronze mounted upon heavy marble or porphyry bases. The clock movements feature brass plates with steel arbours and enamel or bronze dials, designed for durability and precise timekeeping.

Authentic period pieces exhibit high-quality mercury gilding, precise hand-chasing on the bronze mounts, and substantial weight due to solid marble and bronze construction. Movements often display maker stamps or serial numbers on the back plate, alongside traditional silk-thread or steel-spring suspension systems.

A three-piece clock garniture serves as a focal point when placed symmetrically across a chimneypiece mantel or a long reception room sideboard. Pairing dark bronze and gilded tones against modern neutral backgrounds or dark feature walls enhances the silhouette and metalwork contrast.

Gilt bronze surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush and kept free from liquid chemicals or abrasive polishes that can strip original gilding. Marble bases can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth and polished with neutral microcrystalline wax, while internal clock mechanisms require periodic professional servicing by a horologist.
