Antique Gilt and Silvered Bronze Desk Clock and Thermometer Chinoiserie Style

19th century
Description

Antique Gilt And Silvered Bronze Desk Clock And Thermometer Chinoiserie Style.

This wonderful antique desk clock and thermometer has a wonderful tall case made of both gilt and silvered bronze. The top of the case has a wonderful, chinoiserie pagoda style silvered urn on a gilt base with both gilt handles and a gilt finial to the top. The case then has a gilt finial to each corner leading to the top moulding. The case is then square and gilt with “turned” style silvered columns to each corner. Finally the base of the case is comprised of the bottom moulding followed by four shaped, gilt feet.

The clocks dial is then silvered to match the silvered highlights of the case and is set out in roman numerals. The dial is then finished with two blued, “moon” shaped fingers and is covered by a bevelled glass held in place by a gilt, patterned bezel. The movement of the clock is then accessed via the door to the back of the case from where it can be wound and adjusted. The movement runs on a balance shaft and is ticking away nicely.

Below the clock is then the aneroid barometer which also has a silver dial and is set out in the different changing weather conditions. Like the clock it can also be accessed via a separate back door from which it can be adjusted. The barometer is then also covered by a bevelled glass set into a gilt, patterned bezel also has a centre wheel with finger so that the current position can be marked.

It measures approximately:

- 10.25” / 26cm Tall.

- 5.25” / 13.5cm Wide.

- 3.75” / 9.5cm Deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinoiserie horology encompasses European timepieces that incorporate decorative motifs inspired by East Asian art and architecture. Popularised in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these designs frequently feature pagoda finials, bamboo-form columns, and orientalist scrollwork executed in gilt metals.

Antique desk compendia were constructed using cast brass or bronze, often treated with electro-gilding or silver plating to create contrasting tones. Dials were typically manufactured from silvered brass featuring hand-engraved numerals and atmospheric measurement markings under protective glass cover.

Authentic pieces display subtle, uneven oxidisation in recessed areas and rubbing to the gilding or silver plating at natural contact points. Movements feature period-accurate hand-cut gears, steel arbours, and historical thread patterns rather than uniform modern machine fittings.

A metallic desk compendium functions as a sculptural accent when positioned on a minimalist office desk, library shelf, or console table. Pairing architectural metalwork with contemporary neutral tones highlights the classical craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush to prevent grime build-up. AVOID abrasive cleaners, polish compounds, or water, as these permanently remove thin layers of original mercury or electro-plated silvering and gilding.
