Description

Antique Edwardian side cabinet in mahogany, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and delicate inlaid decoration.

This Edwardian side cabinet is an antique mahogany storage piece from the English Country House style. The warm brown timber displays a rich figured grain, complemented by satinwood banding, ebonised stringing, and a moulded cornice at the top. The exterior consists of twin panelled doors with geometric inlay, secured with a small key, and the unit stands securely upon a shaped apron base with cutout bracket feet. Measuring 107.5 cm high, 68 cm wide and 35 cm deep, this compact cupboard fits easily into a living room, dining room, hallway or bedroom. Inside, the cabinet provides storage space behind the pair of panelled doors. The sturdy construction and traditional timber tones suit traditional domestic settings, offering a practical surface and enclosed shelving for household items. Homeowners place such utility cupboards against interior walls to hold books, glassware or daily essentials while maintaining a tidy surface layout in domestic spaces.

Edwardian cabinet design typically features refined classical proportions, lighter visual weight than Victorian predecessors, and delicate wood inlays such as satinwood banding on fine mahogany timber.

These cabinets were primarily constructed using solid or veneered mahogany, frequently accented with satinwood, boxwood, or rosewood stringing and banding, assembled with dovetail joinery and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces display genuine hand-cut or early machine-cut dovetails, original brass escutcheons, consistent naturally aged patination, and fine geometric stringing rather than printed or stamped motifs.

An Edwardian cabinet works effectively as a focal storage unit in a hallway, home office, or dining space, contrasted against modern artwork or light neutral walls to highlight its rich wood grain.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the piece remains away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber movement.
