19th Century Glass Bell Cover or Dome C1850

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A fine Victorian glass dome cover dating to c1850. It has a classic bell form with an applied loop handle to the top.

Historical Context

Although often referred to today as a "smoke dome", the term is largely modern. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, such objects would more commonly have been described as a glass cover, glass bell, or bell jar.

They were never designed to be hung from a ceiling and were primarily used for covering and protecting food, fruit, cheese and other perishables from flies, while helping to keep them fresh. They could also be used to retain warmth and aromas at the dining table, and occasionally to trap smoke from herbs or incense for presentation purposes. More decorative examples were sometimes employed as dressing-table covers for valuable or delicate items.

The applied ring often leads people to assume they were intended as hanging objects, but in most cases it simply allowed the dome to be lifted easily without touching the body. It could also be used to hang the cover on a wall hook when not in use and made carrying the dome safer and more convenient.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Applied loop handle with pinched base: hand-formed work before automated glassmaking.
Concentric tooling ridges beneath the finial: shaped by hand at the bench.
Occasional minute air bubbles in the glass: 19th-century batch melting.
Fire-polished resting rim: mouth-blown vessel finished by hand.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian glass bell cover dates to the mid-nineteenth century and originates from England. Formed from clear hand-blown glass, the piece displays a classic bell shape with a flared base rim and an applied loop handle at the top. The smooth, transparent surface allows an unobstructed view through the body, while the interior remains pristine. Measuring 22 cm in height and 14.3 cm in diameter, the dome stands upright on any flat surface. In a modern interior, this versatile object works well placed on a sideboard top in a dining room or kitchen to cover and protect food, fruit, or cheese. Alternatively, it serves as a dressing-table display cover for delicate items, or simply as an ornamental glass accent in a sunlit conservatory. The loop handle permits easy lifting and convenient wall storage when the cover is not in active use.

Originally created during the nineteenth century, glass bell covers or cloches were used in horticulture to protect delicate seedlings from frost, as well as indoors to protect food and small collectibles from dust.

These covers were mouth-blown from clear soda-lime glass, shaped manually while molten into a bell form, and completed with a glass loop or knob handle applied to the crown.

Authentic period examples often display subtle hand-blown traits such as minor air bubbles, slight asymmetrical contours, thickness variations, and pontil marks where the handle or base was detached during production.

A glass cloche can be styled on a tabletop, mantelpiece, or sideboard to enclose small sculptural objects, botanicals, or candles, functioning as a focal point within modern tabletops.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, drying thoroughly with a lint-free cloth, while avoiding hot water to prevent thermal stress to historic glass.
