Clockwise has dated this Georgian Mahogany Bracket Clock to the Georgian era.
The substantial case is veneered in richly figured mahogany with hardly any shrinkage.
Original pierced brass sound frets embellish the sides, and the glazed front door with original old glass is further enriched by decorative brass mouldings, lending the clock an imposing presence.

The finely executed 8-inch arched silvered dial is furnished with elegant blued steel hands and an outer chapter ring with five-minute divisions. Within the arch is a fully operational strike/silent selector, allowing the striking mechanism to be engaged or silenced as desired. Of particular interest is the less commonly encountered subsidiary date dial positioned in the lower section of the main dial, which remains fully functional. Finely cast original brass spandrels complete this handsome and well-balanced arrangement.

Behind the dial lies a substantial and beautifully engineered eight-day, five-pillar, twin-fusee movement, retaining its original verge escapement — a particularly desirable feature for collectors seeking mechanical originality. The clock strikes the hours in full, with a single strike at the half-hour, upon a bell of pleasingly mellow tone. The movement is further distinguished by its extensively foliate-engraved backplate and similarly decorated stabilising brackets. This clock has just been completely overhauled and as such benefits from my three year guarantee.

Although unsigned, the clock exhibits numerous characteristics associated with the better London workshops of the Georgian period. The quality of the movement, its five-pillar construction, original verge escapement and accomplished decorative finishing suggest manufacture within an established and highly capable clockmaking workshop. One intriguing possibility is that the clock represents the work of a skilled apprentice operating under the supervision of a master clockmaker.

An appealing acquisition for the discerning collector of English bracket clocks and an elegant testament to the craftsmanship of London’s celebrated 18th-century clockmaking tradition.
