Regency Mahogany Fusee Striking Bracket Clock, Stunning

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to present another fine Regency London bracket clock in lovely condition for your consideration. This is a high quality mahogany and brass inlaid chamfer top bracket clock with dentil work to the case top and bottom and brass inlay throughout the case front. The clock is surmounted by a chamfer top with a gadroon finish adorned by a brass pineapple on a small plinth. The case edges are chamfered with brass inlay and the sides have original handles and lined brass frets. The whole case stands on matching ball feet.

The painted enamel dial is in superb condition signed by the maker 'George Harris, The Strand' and is complimented by original period moon hands. The original locking cast bezel finishes off the appearance gloriously and one key fits both working original locks

This clock has a twin fusee wire-driven eight day bell striking movement with five pillars, as befits superior movements of this period, and shaped shoulders to the movement. The rack strike movement strikes the full hours on a glorious bell with a pull/repeat working facility to the side and the more desirable London pendulum is present, as is the all important travel stop.

Dating from circa 1820, and just under 21 inches tall, this clock is in showroom condition and a truly lovely example of high-quality London Regency clock-making and the clock benefits from my three year guarantee.

George Harris was an English clockmaker who operated a business from The Strand in London during the Regency period. He is identified primarily through his elegant, high-quality domestic clocks crafted between 1800 and 1830.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early nineteenth century, Regency bracket clocks are characterised by architectural mahogany cases, intricate brass inlay, decorative brass mounts such as lion-mask handles, and spring-driven fusee movements.

A fusee is a cone-shaped pulley connected by a chain or cord to the mainspring barrel, designed to equalise the power delivered to the clock gears as the mainspring unwinds.

Authentic pieces typically feature cast brass bezels, convex painted or engraved dials, hand-cut brass fretwork with silk linings, and natural timber wear consistent with nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

Position the timepiece as a focal accent on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or deep window sill, pairing its warm timber tones with neutral paint palettes or contemporary decorative accents.

Keep the timber case away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth, nourish with high-grade beeswax polish, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a horologist every three to five years.
