This solid dark brown oak bracket clock dates from the 1920 period in a late Victorian style. The dome top case shows geometric wooden moulding across the front, standing on adjustable brass ball feet, and houses a convex glass over an engraved silvered dial with Roman numerals and steel hands, alongside a brass bezel and side hinges. The case measures 38 cm high, 26.5 cm wide, and 17.5 cm deep. Place this mantel clock upon a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study to display the eight-day fusee movement signed by the original retailers Sam Lyon Junior Blackpool, which strikes the hours on a gong and was made by Gillette & Johnston of Croydon. The fully serviced timepiece operates as a practical working desk or shelf accessory for any traditional interior space.

A fusee bracket clock is a spring-driven mechanical timepiece utilizing a conical brass pulley, known as a fusee, to equalize the force exerted by the mainspring as it unwinds. Arched top cases became prominent in British clockmaking during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, offering an architectural silhouette designed to sit on a wall bracket, mantelpiece, or sideboard.

These timepieces traditionally feature heavy wooden cases constructed from oak, mahogany, or walnut, often adorned with brass bezels, bun feet, and silvered or painted brass dials. The internal movement relies on precision brass plates, steel arbors, and a fine steel chain or gut cord wrapped around the fusee cone.

Authentic fusee clocks feature a distinctive cone-shaped pulley and chain system visible within the brass plate movement, rather than a direct barrel drive. Original nineteenth-century examples generally display hand-engraved silvered dials, heavy cast brass bezels, thick bevelled glass, and hand-cut steel clock hands.

A dark oak bracket clock acts as a focal anchor when positioned centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or library bookshelf. Complementing the rich wood tone with muted paint palettes, natural stone surfaces, or minimalist brass accessories allows the historic geometric craftsmanship to stand out.

Keep the clock situated away from direct sunlight, radiators, and draughts to prevent the timber case from drying out or warping. The mechanical movement requires regular winding with a matching key and should be professionally serviced and lubricated by a qualified horologist every three to five years.
