This mid-Victorian mahogany two-door pier cabinet dates to approximately 1860. The piece is constructed from rich, figured mahogany with flame veneers in a warm brown colour, complemented by glazed doors and a fabric-lined interior with patterned upholstery. Brass-mounted detailing adorns the frieze, while decorative ormolu mounts and foliate marquetry inlay decorate the front and side panels. A moulded edge surmounts the rectangular top, and the cabinet rests on a substantial moulded plinth base with bracket feet. The glazed doors open using small brass handles to reveal two interior shelves, and the structure is finished with fine brass beading. Measuring 101 cm high, 108 cm wide, and 31.5 cm deep, this item provides practical storage. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library, drawing room, or hallway, the cabinet functions well for displaying china, glassware, books, collectibles, or objets d'art. The compact depth allows it to sit flush against a wall in smaller spaces while offering generous interior display capacity through the double glass doors.

Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, pier cabinets were low, decorative storage pieces designed specifically to occupy the narrow wall area, or pier, located between two windows. They were created to display books, porcelain, or curiosities while providing a flat surface for decorative urns or table lamps.

Victorian pier cabinets were typically constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often decorated with floral marquetry or parquetry inlays. They frequently incorporate clear glass paneled doors, interior fabric or velvet linings, and cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and key escutcheons.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer structures, original brass or ormolu mounts with subtle patination, and uneven glass panels typical of hand-blown production. Examining the back panel for hand-sawn timber boards and age-appropriate wood shrinkage also aids in verification.

A glazed cabinet offers elegant display storage in living rooms, hallways, or dining areas alongside contemporary art and minimalist soft furnishings. The dark timber finish adds architectural grounding and historical contrast within modern neutral colour palettes.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber from warping or the finish from fading.
