Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

An Edwardian mantel clock dated 1900, constructed from rich brown mahogany with satinwood inlay, brass, glass, and a white enamel dial. The balloon-shaped case displays intricate swag marquetry, floral paterae, and a polished brass bezel surrounding the clock face, resting on stepped wooden feet with a stepped plinth base. Original black hands indicate the time on the dial, which bears legible numerals and black text markings, while fine surface graining is visible across the wooden body. The piece stands 25 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece in a living room, study, or hallway, it functions as a traditional timekeeper and decorative tabletop accessory in a domestic interior.

Edwardian mantel clocks date from the early twentieth century and feature classicist forms influenced by eighteenth-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs. Typical characteristics include balloon or kidney-shaped cases, light timber construction, and fine marquetry inlay.

Clockmakers predominantly used mahogany, satinwood, rosewood, and oak for the cases, decorated with boxwood stringing or floral marquetry. Internal mechanisms utilised brass components, paired with enamel or silvered brass dials and brass bezels.

Authentic pieces feature fine hand-inlaid motifs, convex glass covers, brass bezels, and mechanical key-wind movements. Examining maker marks on the dial or movement backplate, along with natural patination on timber and metalwork, helps confirm age.

Place the clock as a central focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or bookshelf alongside contemporary artwork or ceramics. The dark wood tones introduce warm texture and historical contrast to neutral interior schemes.

Position the wooden case away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent cracking or fading of the marquetry. Dust the exterior gently with a dry microfibre cloth, apply beeswax sparingly, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
