Antique Exhibition Quality Carved Mahogany Nine Tube Chiming Longcase Clock

19th century
Description

An exceptional exhibition quality carved mahogany longcase clock of impressive scale and presence, richly decorated throughout with bold scrolling foliage, latticework panels and finely executed carving. The case is of outstanding craftsmanship designed to showcase both the artistry of the cabinet maker and the sophistication of the movement within.

The beautifully detailed dial features a silvered chapter ring with gilt engraved centre, subsidiary seconds dial and chime selection, surmounted by a rolling moonphase in the arch. The movement is of particularly high quality striking and chiming on a full set of nine tubular bells offering both Westminster and Whittington chimes. The sound produced is deep and resonant far richer than standard bell striking clocks.

Fitted with a mercury pendulum the clock was designed for greater accuracy, compensating for temperature changes and reflecting the technical advancements of the late 19th century. The pierced trunk door reveals the full arrangement of tubes and pendulum enhanced by decorative fretted panels and rich colouring behind.

Clocks of this calibre were produced as statement pieces often referred to as exhibition clocks, intended to demonstrate the highest standards of horology and cabinet making. The combination of elaborate carving, multiple chime options and advanced movement places this example firmly at the top end of production.

Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

This 19th-century Victorian longcase clock is constructed from dark brown mahogany, brass, glass, and steel. The case displays an ornate swan-neck pediment with open latticework, bold scrolling foliage, shell-carved motifs, and detailed turnings along the trunk sides. A glazed trunk door with fretwork panels reveals nine tubular chimes and a mercury pendulum inside. The brass dial includes a moon phase indicator, subsidiary seconds dial, and gilt engraving, set within an architectural body resting on carved scroll feet. The clock measures 262 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. Positioned as a grand statement piece, this longcase clock serves as a focal point in a hallway, drawing room, or grand reception space. The movement runs and chimes, with the case showing a rich patina and light age-related wear from regular use. The combination of architectural proportions and intricate woodwork provides a traditional timepiece suited for prominent interior displays.

These floor-standing clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late seventeenth century and reached peak ornamental elaboration during the Victorian era. Characterised by intricate wood carvings, brass dials, and elaborate chiming mechanisms, they served as central timekeeping focal points in grand hallways and reception rooms.

High-specification longcase clocks feature solid mahogany cases, brass dials with silvered chapter rings, and precision steel movements. Nine tubular chimes use nickel-plated or brass tubes struck by hammers to produce multi-chime melodies such as Westminster or Whittington.

Examine the movement for makers marks, period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the case, and natural wear around winding holes. Authentic tubular bell movements feature heavy cast brass plates and original weight pulleys rather than modern quartz or chain-driven conversions.

Position the clock as an anchor piece in a spacious hallway, stairwell landing, or formal reception room. Pair it with neutral wall shades and contemporary architectural lighting to highlight the carved mahogany details and brass dial without overwhelming the space.

Keep the clock level and positioned away from direct heat sources or dampness to prevent wood movement and movement desynchronisation. Have the mechanical movement professionally cleaned and oiled every five to seven years, and dust the mahogany case with a soft microfibre cloth.
