FAQs

A deuddarn is a traditional Welsh two-tier press cupboard introduced in the 17th century, comprising a smaller upper cabinet resting on a larger lower cupboard base, historically used to store food, linens, or tableware.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from local solid English or Welsh oak using pegged mortise and tenon joinery, panelled doors with raised or fielded arches, and turned timber drop pendant decorations.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed oak surfaces, pegged joinery, original iron or early brass escutcheons, hand-carved initials or dates, and consistent oxidation wear on internal shelving and base rails.

Position the piece as a focal point in an entry hall, dining room, or kitchen alongside neutral wall finishes, contemporary artwork, or minimalist ceramics to balance the dark timber tones.

Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber movement, dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the original wax patina.
