Oak Tridarn

18th century
Description

Early 18th century Welsh Oak Tridarn . Lovely patina and structurally sound . There is evidence of historical wood worm ( in the base ) being but very little - you would hardly notice .

There is small damage ( as photographed ) on the ledge that was probably where a candle burnt the surface very slightly . The feet are a little bit low but overall a fine and very impressive piece of furniture .

This early 18th century Welsh tridarn is an oak cupboard made in a rustic farmhouse style with a dark brown finish and brass hardware. The upper section has an open canopy tier supported by turned balusters above a middle section with three arched fielded panel doors. The lower base contains three small drawers over two large cupboard doors with similar arched fielded panels. Visible details include small brass drop handles on the drawers and doors, moulded cornices, and historical woodworm in the base along with a small burn mark on the ledge. The piece stands 190 cm high, 141 cm wide, and 54 cm deep. Practical for use as a prominent storage and display cupboard in a dining room, kitchen, or living area, this tridarn holds tableware, linens, or decorative items. The sturdy timber construction suits traditional and country interiors where substantial storage is required. The dark wood tone integrates easily with neutral or warm wall colours and existing wooden furniture.

A tridarn is a traditional three-tier press cupboard native to Wales, constructed in three distinct stacking sections including a top open canopy shelf, a middle cupboard, and a lower base cupboard.

Tridarns were almost exclusively crafted from native solid oak using hand-planed joinery, mortise and tenon joints, oak pegs, and fielded or arched panelling.

Authentic period examples feature three separate separable sections, peg joinery, hand-turned balusters, hand-forged iron or brass hardware, and sign of genuine wood age such as shrinkage and patination.

Position the piece against a neutral backdrop in a hallway, dining space, or open-plan living area to allow the dark timber and geometric panelling to act as an architectural anchor.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality bees wax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
