Introduction

Antique Painted Dressers

Pine is what you'll meet. It names 40 of the 94 titles on Sellingantiques, while oak surfaces only twice across the whole sample. Softwood dressers were routinely painted from new, both to protect the timber and to stand in for costlier finishes, so paint on a pine dresser is often part of the original scheme rather than a later idea.

The dominant form is a mid-to-late 19th-century painted pine dresser of English or Welsh country type. Thirty listings sit in the 19th century and thirteen are labelled Victorian, with 'country' and 'kitchen' recurring in titles. Roughly half the archive is the full two-part form, base and rack lifting apart as separate sections.

About one in ten titles say 'base' alone: the lower half on bun or turned feet, without the shelves above. Regional naming runs deep for a single category, with Welsh in nine titles and West Country, Cornish and Penzance, Somerset, Dorset, Tamar Valley, Tregaron, Cumbrian, Lancashire and Scottish all appearing. Irish painted dressers form a small distinct group, including a chicken coop dresser with a barred lower section.

Continental examples turn up occasionally: French several times, including an enfilade and a metal field kitchen dresser with drainer, plus single Swedish, Danish, Hungarian and Alpine folk-art pieces. Dating is usually a band rather than a year. Only 29 listings carry a clean year, running 1800 to 1930, and 18th-century or Georgian placings are the dealer's own.

What sets them apart

Where The Range Splits

Paint does most of the sorting. 'In Original Paint', 'Original Scumble Paint' and 'Original Cream Paint' run through the middle and upper range. Titles that say later painted, distressed paint finish, or 'to wax / paint' meaning unfinished, sit lower down.

Completeness and scale pull the same way. A dresser with its rack, whether open shelved or glazed, generally stands above a base alone, and small proportioned, miniature and 'small pretty' examples cluster at the bottom while large and monumental pieces sit high. The exception is size beating form: a monumental country-house base ranks near the top, and the largest stated width is 162cm.

A named type carries weight. West Country, Welsh, Tamar Valley, Dorset, Somerset, Penzance and Tregaron descriptors concentrate in the upper half, as do country-house and town-house labels. The eleven 18th-century listings and the Georgian, George III and William IV attributions sit almost entirely up there too.

The Antique Painted Dressers Glossary

Dresser base
The lower half alone, without the shelved rack above. Named as such in ten titles, usually on bun or turned feet.
Rack
The shelved superstructure standing on the base. Sometimes open, sometimes fitted with glass doors, in which case titles say glazed topped or partly glazed.
Two-part
Base and rack made as separate sections that lift apart. Titles also write it as '2 part' or '2 Piece'.
Original paint
The surface the piece has carried since it was made, as opposed to a later repaint. Used in a dozen titles, against several that state later painted openly.
Scumble
A dragged or grained paint effect worked over a ground colour, imitating figured timber. One title cites original scumble paint.
Pot board
A low open board at floor level between the legs of a base, made to take heavy pots. It appears in three titles.
Questions people ask

Antique Painted Dressers: Frequently Asked Questions

How many painted dressers are listed each year?

Around nine a year on Sellingantiques, and 31 different dealers have offered one.

That's a wide spread of stock rather than a few specialists holding the category. It also means the mix shifts, since no single dealer sets what turns up.

Is a dresser base different from a complete dresser?

A base is the lower half on its own, without the shelved rack. About one in ten titles describe one, and as a group they sit lower in the range than the complete two-part form.

Size can override that. A monumental country-house base ranks near the top of the sampled range, well above small complete dressers.

What does original paint mean on these?

It means the surface the dresser has carried since it was made. Pine was painted from new to protect the timber and imitate more expensive finishes, so an early scheme is often the first one.

A dozen titles use the phrase, including original scumble paint and original cream paint. Others state later painted, meaning paint applied after the piece was built.

Are there any named makers in this category?

No. A scan across all 94 listings returned no maker, workshop or retailer names at all.

These are vernacular pieces, so what a listing names instead is region, timber and paint. Welsh, West Country, Irish and Scottish descriptors do the work a maker's stamp would elsewhere.

Which regions show up in the titles?

Welsh leads with nine titles. West Country, Cornish and Penzance, Somerset, Dorset, Tamar Valley, Tregaron, Cumbrian, Lancashire and Scottish all appear as well.

Irish dressers form their own small group, including an early 19th-century red painted example and a chicken coop dresser with a slatted lower compartment.

Regional naming is unusually rich for one category, and the named types concentrate in the upper half of the range.

Do continental painted dressers turn up?

Yes, under a tenth of the archive. French examples appear several times, among them a long low enfilade and a metal field kitchen dresser fitted with a drainer.

Swedish, Danish, Hungarian and Alpine folk-art dressers each appear once, the Swedish one placed in the 18th century.
