Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century English country kitchen dresser is rendered in a soft sage green painted finish across its pine construction, complemented by tongue and groove backing within the upper display area. Notable visible details include brass drop handles on the four drawers, small brass knobs on the four fielded panel doors, and a moulded cornice topping the entire structure, alongside visible wear on the painted surfaces that highlights its age. The upper section contains glazed sliding doors with multi-pane windows, while the lower base provides substantial closed storage and drawer space. Standing at 221 cm high, 224.5 cm wide, and 62 cm deep, this substantial piece suits placement in a kitchen or dining room for displaying tableware and storing kitchen essentials in a traditional home interior.

FAQs

A traditional English painted dresser typically features a two-part construction comprising a lower storage base with drawers and cupboards, topped by a glazed display cabinet or open shelving rack. Historically used in country kitchens and sculleries for storing and displaying ceramics, painted finishes protected softwoods like pine.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from softwoods such as pine or deal, featuring hand-dovetailed drawers, tongue-and-groove backboards, and field-panelled cupboard doors. The upper glazed doors often utilise mortise-and-tenon framing with individually beaded glazing bars.

Authentic examples demonstrate natural wear patterns around original drawer pulls, keyhole escutcheons, and plinth edges, often showing underlying paint layers or bare wood beneath. Look for hand-planed backboards, square hand-cut nails, and slight irregularities in the glazed door panels.

In modern interiors, a painted dresser serves as a functional focal point in a dining room, kitchen, or open-plan living space. Contrast the muted painted timber with contemporary ceramics, glassware, or minimalist cookware to bridge traditional and modern aesthetic styles.

Dust the painted surface regularly using a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays or water that can damage fragile paint layers. Apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly to maintain timber stability and protect the surface patina.
