A Fine Swiss Art Deco 8-Day Strut Clock/table Clock C.1920

A superb and rare small Swiss 8-day table clock, dating to circa 1920, presented in wonderful original condition.

The beautifully cast rectangular case is executed in gilt bronze and stands on two ornate raised feet. The case is richly decorated with garlands of roses around its perimeter, displaying the elegant decorative character associated with the period.

The gilt finished dial features four panels of finely executed engine turning and is further embellished with hand-painted Arabic numerals in red and black. Three rectangular apertures within the dial reveal a charming hand painted triptych.

The central panel depicts a romantic 18th century Italian couple seated together on a garden bench, while the two side panels extend the scene to reveal the surrounding landscape, including the bow of an Italian gondola.

The clock retains its original fine blued-steel hands. To the rear is a hinged, decoratively cast strut which folds out to allow the clock to stand freely on a table or mantel.

The clock is fitted with a high-quality jewelled Swiss 8 day movement. It was acquired from a private collection and has been tested by myself. It runs well and keeps good time.

A particularly charming and unusual example, combining finely cast gilt-bronze decoration with an exceptionally attractive painted dial.
