Georgian Rare Balustroid Wine Glass, Engraved Pan Top Bowl

Description

This is a scarce Georgian, English, engraved balustroid stem wine glass with a pan-top bowl dating from the early to middle part of the 18th century, c1740.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a pan-top bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is prettily engraved with a trailing, fruiting grapevine under the rim and sits on a balustroid stem with shoulder and medial knops, the join between bowl and stem showing an extraneous lump of glass. The stem ends in a conical, folded foot which measures 6.7 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15.3 cm (6.1 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a number of dealer's or collector's stickers to the underside of the foot, one of which incorrectly identifies the glass as a Newcastle Light Baluster.
