Miniature Hook & Spike Lantern Style Wall Clock.

18th century
Description

A charming and finely detailed miniature Hook & Spike wall clock by Thomas Nourse of London, dating to approximately 1760.

The dial measures only 5.5 inches in height and just over 4 inches in width.

This decorative timepiece is modelled after the traditional English lantern clock, featuring an ornate brass case with richly cast foliate spandrels and a silvered chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals. Also with an Alarm to the centre of the dial.

The arched crest bears a signed roundel inscribed “Thomas Nourse, London. The elegant blued-steel single hand and a matted centre. The characteristic bell-top surmount and hanging chains reflect the form of larger 18th-century weight-driven wall clocks.

The movement features a verge escapement and will run for approximately 30 hours. It can also sound a very loud alarm as required

Miniature clocks of this type were often produced as collectors’ pieces or possibly as a travelling alarm clock. How effective this would be as a travelling timepiece certainly does leave a lot to the imagination.

A distinctive example of rare English clockmaking, offering both decorative charm and historical character.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A hook and spike clock is an early form of weight-driven wall timepiece, named after the iron hanging hook and downward-pointing stabilizing spikes attached to its frame.

These clocks are constructed from brass plates, cast brass spandrels, steel arbors, and silvered brass chapter rings, topped with a bell for striking or alarm mechanisms.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-engraved maker signatures on the dial or arch boss, hand-cut gear teeth, cast spandrels secured with screws, and hand-filed metalwork.

A miniature lantern clock serves as a focal point when hung on a narrow wall, placed above a console table, or incorporated into a gallery wall display.

Keep the brass surface clean by dusting with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding chemical cleaners or polishes that remove original lacquer and silvering.
