Mid-19th Century French Japy Frères Black Marble Clock Garniture Set

France, c.1850

A substantial and decorative three-piece clock garniture set by Japy Frères, dating to the mid-19th century.

The central clock is housed in a very heavy architectural case of black marble with contrasting red and ochre breccia marble inlay. Classical in form, the case features turned columns, roundels, and a glazed front panel revealing the original gridiron pendulum with glass rods. The white enamel dial has Arabic numerals and finely pierced hands, set within a brass bezel.

The eight-day movement is stamped Japy Frères and numbered, striking on a bell on the hour and half-hour. The backplate shows typical Japy quality, and the mechanism is currently running, though sold without guarantee.

The set is completed by a pair of matching garniture sidepieces, each with conforming marble decoration and circular tazza tops.
