Antique Painted Satinwood Display Cabinet by Hampton & Sons, London C.1900

Description

A particularly fine antique English painted satinwood display cabinet by Hampton & Sons of Pall Mall East, London, dating to around 1900 and retaining the firm's original ivorine trade label.

The cabinet is an impressive example of the late Victorian and Edwardian revival of elegant Sheraton and neoclassical furniture, combining beautifully figured satinwood with delicate painted decoration. Across the upper frieze are finely executed floral garlands surrounding a charming central painted panel depicting classical female figures dancing within a landscape. Further painted swags and wreaths enrich the lower frieze, creating a wonderfully decorative yet refined appearance.

A pair of tall glazed doors opens to reveal a generously proportioned display interior with glass shelves and a velvet-lined back, while glazed side panels allow light to enter from multiple directions and provide excellent visibility for porcelain, silver, glassware or a specialist collection.

The cabinet is raised upon four substantial square, fluted legs, giving the piece architectural presence while retaining the elegant proportions associated with late-19th-century neoclassical cabinetmaking. Brass ring handles provide a restrained finishing detail.

Of particular importance is the surviving original label reading “HAMPTON & SONS / PALL MALL EAST / LONDON.” Founded around 1830, Hampton & Sons became one of London's notable cabinet-making and furnishing houses, making labelled examples especially desirable to collectors of documented English furniture.

Its combination of recognised London provenance, decorative craftsmanship and exceptional display quality gives this cabinet considerably greater collectable appeal than an unattributed example.
