FAQs

Bedside cabinets, historically referred to as pot cupboards or nightstands, gained prominence in 19th and early 20th-century European bedrooms. They were constructed to hold night-time essentials, with durable marble tops fitted to protect the timber frame from moisture and wear.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, often enhanced with burr veneers and carved decorative reliefs. Marble slabs were custom-cut to fit the top surface, complemented by cast brass or bronze handles.

Authentic period cabinets display hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers and age-consistent wear along the feet and internal framework. Genuine marble tops often feature subtle hand-chiseled undersides and natural veining that matches the age of the woodwork.

Balance the rich timber veneers and marble surface by pairing the cabinet with crisp linen textiles and modern neutral wall shades. Beyond the bedroom, these compact pieces serve as effective occasional tables in living areas or hallway alcoves.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a dry cloth and apply natural beeswax polish along the grain to preserve the patination. Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral cleaner, taking care to wipe away spills immediately to prevent staining.
