Pair of Victorian Mahogany Three Drawer Bedside Chests (Adapted) C.1880

19th century
Description

A pair of late Victorian mahogany bedside chests dating from the late 19th century, each fitted with three generously sized drawers and standing on attractive shaped bracket feet.

Originally adapted from larger pieces of Victorian furniture, these chests have been thoughtfully converted to create an exceptionally practical pair of bedside cabinets. Their clean, understated design allows the beautiful mahogany grain and rich warm colour to take centre stage, making them equally suited to both period and contemporary interiors.

Each chest is fitted with three smooth-running drawers offering useful storage, complemented by brass oval drop handles that enhance their classic appearance. The tops provide ample space for bedside lamps or decorative accessories, while the compact proportions make them ideal for bedrooms where storage is at a premium.

Presented in good antique condition with a pleasing mellow patina and the expected minor marks and wear associated with age and use. The adaptation has been sympathetically carried out, resulting in a sturdy and attractive pair ready for everyday use.

This pair of late Victorian bedside chests dates from c.1880. Constructed from mahogany, the pieces display a rich warm brown colour and prominent timber grain beneath a mellow patina, complemented by brass oval drop handles and moulded top edges. Each chest is fitted with three drawers and stands on shaped bracket feet, exhibiting minor marks and wear consistent with age, alongside an adapted form derived from larger furniture. Measuring 80 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, the compact proportions suit restricted spaces. In a modern interior, the cabinets serve effectively as bedside tables positioned flanking a bed, providing surface space for lamps and reading material while the drawer trio offers concealed bedside storage. The clean, understated design bridges period and contemporary bedroom settings, delivering practical storage in a sturdy antique format ready for everyday use.

Late Victorian bedside furniture typically features dense hardwoods like mahogany, robust construction methods, and compact proportions designed for domestic bedroom storage.

Primary timber was commonly Honduran or Cuban mahogany, accompanied by softwoods or oak for internal drawer linings, and cast brass for handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer sides, natural timber oxidisation on unfinished surfaces, period brassware, and age-consistent wear.

Positioning a matching pair alongside a contemporary upholstered bed creates symmetry, while pairing warm wood tones with light neutral walls balances visual weight.

Dust regularly using a dry lint-free cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the grain once or twice annually, and keep clear of direct heat sources.
