A remarkable antique Welsh oak Cwpwrdd Tridarn prominently dated 1743, displaying the monumental proportions, architectural construction and deeply aged surface associated with important early Welsh vernacular furniture.

Traditionally translated as a three-part cupboard, the Cwpwrdd Tridarn is one of the most recognisable forms of Welsh country furniture, particularly associated with North Wales. Combining open display areas with enclosed storage, these substantial cupboards were designed as both practical household furniture and highly visible statements of status and craftsmanship.

The cupboard is arranged across three clearly defined architectural stages. The upper section is surmounted by a substantial moulded cornice above an open display recess, framed by turned columns and backed by a series of vertical fielded panels.

Positioned prominently at the centre of this upper section is an applied shield bearing initials together with the date 1743. This surviving dated detail gives the cupboard a particularly strong sense of history and provides an important decorative focal point within the otherwise restrained oak architecture.

The middle section incorporates two small panelled cupboards positioned either side of a more elaborately detailed central architectural panel. The shaped door mouldings, small turned knobs and dark mature oak surface create excellent visual depth across the façade.

Below this are two useful drawers dividing the middle and lower stages, while the substantial base incorporates a pair of large cupboard doors with strongly shaped fielded panels set within a robust joined oak framework.

The cupboard's greatest decorative asset is its surface. Centuries of use have created considerable variation in colour, grain and patination, with historic marks and natural wear giving the oak a depth and character that cannot be recreated by later furniture.
