This French Art Deco drinks cabinet dates from the 1930s. The piece takes the form of a rectangular cabinet clad in slim, warm brown bamboo canes with a honey finish, framed by thicker canes at the edges and accented with horizontal reeded bamboo panelling. Additional details include decorative black cast-iron strapwork brackets, ornate fleur-de-lis metal hinges, a round keyhole escutcheon, and sculptural black cast-iron legs fitted with small swivelling wheel castors. The front features a fall-down door opening to reveal an open compartment for bottles and glassware, while the top provides a flat surface for mixing and serving. The cabinet measures 87 cm wide by 77 cm high by 44 cm deep. In a modern home, this practical piece serves multiple functions and fits well in a living room, dining room, or sunlit conservatory. It works effectively as a dedicated cocktail cabinet, a compact sideboard, or an occasional console table in a hallway. The lightweight construction combined with the rolling castors allows for easy repositioning within a space.

During the 1930s, French designers frequently combined organic natural materials such as bamboo and rattan with industrial metals, creating light yet durable storage pieces suitable for both urban apartments and country retreats.

These cabinets are typically constructed using split or reeded bamboo panels secured over a timber frame, often supported by wrought or cast-iron legs and fitted with metal hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature natural tone variations in the bamboo, hand-fitted joinery, oxidisation on metal components, and original iron legs or castors with historical wear.

A bamboo cabinet adds organic texture to modern rooms, pairing well alongside leafy indoor plants, neutral wall tones, and contemporary brass or glass accessories.

Keep bamboo furniture away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, dust regularly with a soft dry brush, and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the natural finish.
