Georgian Mahogany Inlaid Bow Front Corner Cupboard

18th century
Description

A good quality Georgian mahogany corner cupboard dating from the late 18th Century. It has an attractive bow front with two doors and inlaid bone urn shaped escutcheons. It has a dentil cornice with an elegant inlaid marquetry border below with shell motifs and a central panel featuring Britannia and her lion.

The doors open to reveal a shelved interior with two small drawers. The interior has been painted white at some point. There is a small brass latch for one door and it comes with a working key for the lock.

The piece has an attractive bow front with two doors, finished with inlaid bone urn-shaped escutcheons, decorative brass H-hinges, and a dentil cornice. Below the cornice runs an elegant inlaid marquetry border featuring shell motifs at the corners and a central panel depicting Britannia and her lion, all rendered in boxwood inlay. The doors open to reveal a shelved interior containing two small drawers, painted white, with a working key and a small brass latch. The cupboard measures 109 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. It is suited for placement in a traditional hallway, dining room, or living room corner to provide storage and display space.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th century, Georgian bow-front corner cupboards feature a convex curved front facade designed to fit into room corners, often incorporating mahogany veneers, marquetry details, and decorative brass fittings.

These cabinets were typically constructed with oak or pine carcases overlaid with flame mahogany veneers, featuring marquetry inlays made from boxwood or satinwood, alongside brass hinges and escutcheons.

Authentic period examples generally show hand-cut joinery, hand-sawn backboards, natural age-related shrinkage in the veneers, and original surface patination around door frames and keyholes.

Position the cupboard in an underutilised corner of a dining room or hallway to add architectural interest, pairing dark polished timber with neutral wall tones or contemporary decorative objects.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft cloth, apply a clear beeswax polish periodically, and keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to protect the timber and delicate inlays.
