Description

A wonderful antique mahogany occasional side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period, with an Arts and Crafts element of design.

It is of very fine quality, the top has a beautiful shape with lovely sweeping serpentine shaped edges. The legs are elegant yet sturdy, there is beautiful pierced fretwork at the top angles where they meet the top edge.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some extremely minor wear and patina remaining here and there beneath the polish.

This Edwardian occasional side table originates from England and dates from around the 1890 to 1910 period, incorporating an Arts and Crafts element of design. Constructed from solid mahogany with a dark brown polished finish, the piece features a serpentine shaped top with sweeping edges above a matching lower shelf. Four slender cabriole legs support the structure, accented by pierced fretwork motifs at the upper angles beneath the top tier. The table stands 71 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. In a modern home, this practical two-tier table serves well at the end of a sofa for lamps, books, or decorative items, or functions as a lamp table in a reception room or hallway. The polished timber surface displays a warm dark brown grain pattern complemented by subtle traces of age beneath the finish.

Emerging in the early 20th century, these tables feature lightweight frames, elegant curves, and often incorporate secondary lower tiers with decorative pierced brackets typical of the eras lighter aesthetic.

Dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany or mahogany veneers were primarily used, polished to a deep lustre and assembled using traditional joinery methods.

Look for features such as original hand-finished surfaces, natural wood shrinkage on shaped tiers, delicate hand-cut pierced apron details, and authentic wear patterns along the legs.

Position it alongside contemporary armchairs or in unused corners as a functional plant stand or lamp table, allowing its rich wood tones and organic silhouette to contrast against modern decor.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax polish periodically.
