1900s Mahogany Stationery Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A Edwardian mahogany stationery cabinet dating from the early 20th century, featuring elegant satinwood string inlay to the doors and retaining a wonderfully practical interior arrangement.

The cabinet is fitted with a pair of lockable doors which open to reveal three graduated drawers, each retaining its original recessed brass campaign-style handle. Above sits a sloping writing surface, giving the piece the appearance of a compact bureau while maintaining a small footprint, making it ideal for use as a desk-top cabinet, jewellery box, stationery cabinet, or collector's storage piece.

Constructed in richly figured mahogany veneer with delicate satinwood inlaid decoration, the cabinet displays the restrained elegance typical of the Edwardian period. The moulded plinth base and stepped top add further architectural detail, while the warm patina acquired over more than a century enhances its character and appeal.

A highly decorative and functional piece, equally suited to a study, dressing room, or retail display setting.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a clean microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber and protect the original finish.

Place the cabinet on a modern office desk, console table, or sideboard top to add historical depth and functional storage for contemporary desk accessories.

Authentic pieces from around 1900 feature traditional joinery techniques, internal stepped partitions for paper, light surface wear consistent with age, and original steel or brass locks.

These pieces were typically crafted using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, often decorated with delicate timber inlays, stringing, and brass keyhole escutcheons.

A stationery cabinet is a tabletop storage container developed during the Victorian and Edwardian eras to organise letters, writing paper, envelopes, and desktop implements.
