Victorian majolica is a type of colourful lead-glazed earthenware that gained immense popularity during the mid-to-late 19th century, particularly after being showcased at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

These pieces are typically fashioned from buff-coloured earthenware clay and finished with opaque, brightly coloured metal-oxide glazes fired directly onto a tin-opacified enamel or raw glaze.

Authentic pieces often feature characteristic crazing in the glaze, moulded relief decoration, weight indicative of dense earthenware, and occasionally makers ciphers or registration marks on the unglazed base.

Such a statement piece works effectively as a freestanding sculptural element in an entryway or hallway, allowing its rich colours and historical presence to contrast against minimalist walls.

Majolica should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth and kept away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent deterioration of the historic glaze and underlying earthenware.
