Sienna Marble Mantel Clock.

19th century
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

A fine Sienna marble, French mantel clock with '8 day' duration movement and bell striking on the hours and half hours which can be silenced if required. Sienna marble clocks are extremely rare and the last one we had around 15 years ago sold within a week! This clock most likely dates to around 1870 and has a slim profile which makes it an ideal size for Mantel's. The clear white vitreous enamel dial is near perfect and the 'moon' hands are original too. The Malachite inlaid Urn to the front panel is bordered with a dark grey Marble and the Red sections are Griotte Marble - getting it's name from the Morello (Griotte) Cherry. A stunning piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Neoclassical sienna marble mantel clock features a case crafted from rich yellow-hued sienna stone, often decorated with classical motifs such as inlaid urns, brass trim, and architectural proportions inspired by classical antiquity.

These clocks typically utilise solid or veneered marble slabs, such as sienna, rouge, or belgian black, alongside brass mechanical movements, white enamel dials, and stone inlays like malachite or lapis lazuli.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cut marble joins, heavy cast-brass bezels, key-wound eight-day mechanical movements, and hand-painted Roman numerals on an enamel dial.

Position the timepiece centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or library bookshelf to serve as a grounding focal point amidst contemporary artwork or minimalist decor.

Dust the marble regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and clean gently using a pH-neutral stone cleaner, avoiding acidic substances and harsh liquids near the brass or mechanical clockwork.
