It has a wide drawn trumpet bowl above an inverted baluster knop with a large central tear, Sits on domed foot.

A domed foot Kit Kat glass is a rare beast indeed and only the 2nd example we have had.

Date & Origin

England, c1740. Period of George II.

Condition

Excellent, no chips cracks or restoration

Dimensions

Height: 15.8 cm

Rim diameter: 7.3 cm

Foot diameter: 7.5 cm

Historical Relevance

The Kit-Cat Club was an early 18th-century English club in London with strong political and literary associations. Members of the club were committed Whigs and they met at the Trumpet Tavern in London and at Water Oakley in the Berkshire countryside. The name and style of the glass come from period paintings that depict the gentlemen at the club drinking and partying with this style of glass... although I'm sure they probably used any glass that came to hand.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A balustroid wine glass is an 18th-century drinking vessel characterised by a stem featuring turned baluster-style knops, developed in Britain during the reign of King George II as glass stemware evolved from heavier full-baluster forms into lighter profiles.

These glasses were hand-blown from lead crystal, featuring stems shaped with knops or trapped air tears, fused between a flared trumpet bowl and a hand-formed folded or domed foot.

Authentic Georgian glasses typically exhibit a rough pontil mark on the underside of the base, minor striations or small seeds within the lead crystal, and natural frictional wear on the foot rim.

Display individual or grouped period stemware inside illuminated glass cabinets, on polished sideboard tops, or as historic decorative accents within a library or dining room setting.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using a mild non-abrasive detergent, avoiding dishwasher use or extreme temperature fluctuations that cause thermal shock to historic hand-blown glass.
