Victorian Fusee Wall Bracket/dial Clock, Rare

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to present for your consideration a fine example of an early Victorian eight day dial fusee wall clock. This unusual mahogany example has an 8 inch dial with 'J. Metcalfe, London' notated to the dial and the clock surround is of a carved foliage design over a fixed bracket with undertier. Original spade hands compliment the appearance as does the original cast brass bezel.

The recently overhauled and cleaned eight day duration fusee timepiece movement has an anchor recoil escapement and as such benefits from my three year guarantee.

The restored case is a standard two-piece design with decorative surround attaching to the back box via four matching wooden pegs. There is an access door to each side of the clock.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

There are a few similar clocks on the market, similarly priced yet unrestored, so this early piece represents great value for money and also peace of mind, coming as it does with my three year guarantee.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian fusee clock incorporates a cone-shaped pulley mechanism connected to the mainspring barrel via a chain or cord. This design equalizes the power output as the spring unwinds, ensuring steady timekeeping precision throughout its winding cycle.

These clocks typically feature cases fashioned from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or rosewood, often enhanced with hand-carved decoration. The clock faces were predominantly painted iron or enamel with brass bezels and cast glass covers.

Authentic fusee movements display a distinctive conical brass pulley wheel alongside heavy brass plates joined by turned pillars. Dial signatures frequently include the makers name and town of operation, complemented by traditional hand-cut steel hands.

A carved timber wall clock provides a focal anchor on a neutral wall surface, pairing well with contemporary minimalist furniture or traditional dark wood joinery. Position it at eye level in an entryway, hallway, or study to highlight its architectural structure.

Mechanical clocks require level mounting to maintain proper pendulum swing and consistent operation. Regular professional cleaning and lubrication of the movement every five to seven years prevents wear on the brass bushings and steel pivots.
