Georgian Domestic Regulator Longcase Clock, Rare Configuration
£3,500 $4,794 €4,023
Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection a fine quality London Georgian domestic regulator longcase clock by Joseph Davie of High Holborn, London. Dating from circa 1830, this gorgeous example has a mahogany case with high quality flame mahogany veneers and is of slim and elegant proportions.
This clock has the very rare fitted bolt and shutter maintaining power which explains why the winding aperture is covered by a brass plate until the lever to the side on the dial front is activated to arrest the power making its way through the train whilst the clock is being wound. The 12 inch dial is notated with the makers details and is in a lovely unrestored condition and original blued spade hands, and a delightfully original seconds hand completes the handsome appearance. The dial, fronts a four pillar regulator movement with shaped plates, having dead beat anchor escapement and maintaining power. The original London style weight and pendulum accompany this fine piece.
...The case has a wonderful natural sheen to it, the locking hood benefiting from ebony inlay to the lower quadrants with an arched moulded surround and the original wavy cresting separating three pillars with finials atop. The hood further benefits from reeded side columns, newly relined sound frets to the sides and the trunk door has ebonised edging and retains a working lock and the key, as does the original heavy cast bezel (with convex glass) to the hood. The whole clock stands on a raised plinth and base panel with square moulding strip.
Joseph Davie is recorded as working from 1828 to 1851.
This really is a fine example of a much sought after piece and benefits from my three year warranty.
