This Edwardian bedside cabinet dates from 1910 and is made from warm brown satinwood and brass, standing 77 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. The piece takes the form of a rectangular cabinet supported on four slender turned legs with carved decorative collars, with a single door fitted with a brass drop handle. The door surface displays chevron veneering arranged in a book-matched pattern, centred around an oval ribbon inlay. Suitable for use as a bedside table or an occasional accent piece, the cabinet provides surface space on top and storage behind its door. The design incorporates tiered mouldings along the top cornice edge, a flat top surface, and a flush-fitting door set into a plain carcass frame. The warm golden-brown timber tones and delicate marquetry details suit traditional English Country House settings and period-inspired bedrooms or sitting rooms.

During the Edwardian era, furniture makers drew inspiration from 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs, utilizing satinwood for its golden tone and distinct grain. Bedside cabinets from this period, derived from traditional nightstands or pot cupboards, were crafted with delicate marquetry and crossbanding to suit refined bedroom interiors.

These cabinets were predominantly constructed using satinwood veneers over solid oak or mahogany carcasses. Decorative elements incorporated boxwood, ebony, or rosewood inlays, alongside cast brass or bronze metalware fittings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneering, precise joinery such as dovetail joints on drawers, and natural patination within the timber grain. Look for hand-applied marquetry inlay patterns, subtle age-related shrinkage lines, and original brass hardware displaying light oxidisation.

A satinwood cabinet functions as a nightstand beside an upholstered bedstead or as an occasional side table in a sitting room. Pairing golden timber tones with neutral linen textiles creates a balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary space.

Position the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or veneer lifting. Clean surfaces using a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish.
