Museum-quality Pair of Kyoto Satsuma Moriage Vases, Meiji C.1900 — Heavy Gilt, Religious & Landscape Panels

1900 - 1920
Description

Museum-quality matched pair of Kyoto Satsuma vases from Japan’s late 19th–early 20th century. The deep night-blue ground is covered with warm gold and hand-painted enamels; the decoration is slightly raised to the touch, giving a luxurious “jewelled” surface. Each vase is divided into four panels. On the main panels you see the Japanese goddess of compassion (Kannon) surrounded by saintly followers with halos; on the other sides — quiet temple landscapes with pines, water and distant hills. This is classic Kyoto Satsuma made for the Western market at the height of the Meiji era: rich colour, fine detail, strong presence in an interior. True matching pairs of this size, with bright original gilding and clean surfaces, are now hard to find and hold their value well.

Technique and origin: Satsuma ware (fine cream body with the typical fine crackle), heavy gold and coloured enamels on a dark ground, slightly raised “moriage” details; painted red workshop mark “Kyo” (Kyoto) under each base. Very good antique condition: fine age crackle as made, minor rubbing to high points only, no structural damage seen.

Dimensions:

Vase 1: Height: 22.5 cm; Diameter: 21 cm; Weight: 1,716 g

Vase 2: Height: 22.7 cm; Diameter: 21 cm; Weight: 1,946 g

This matched pair of Kyoto Satsuma earthenware vases originates from the late 19th to early 20th century during the Meiji period. The objects showcase a deep night-blue ground covered with warm gold and hand-painted enamels, with raised moriage details giving a jewelled surface. Each bulbous vessel features raised white and gold scrolling mouldings framing the main panels, which depict the goddess Kannon surrounded by haloed saintly figures. The reverse sides display quiet temple landscapes with pines, water and distant hills, all complemented by dark blue neck and base sections and a painted red workshop mark under each base. Vase 1 stands 22.5 cm in height with a 21 cm diameter, while Vase 2 measures 22.7 cm in height with a 21 cm diameter. These decorative vases function as a striking focal point in a home, suitable for placement on a mantelpiece in a living room or study. The maximalist design integrates vibrant hues of red, green, and gold against the dark background, with detailed faces and robes rendered on the earthenware bodies. The pieces exhibit very good antique condition with fine age crackle as made and minor rubbing to high points only. They bring a distinct historical character to interior spaces through traditional Japanese craftsmanship and intricate ornamental panels.

Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware ceramics that originated in the Satsuma province during the sixteenth century. It is widely recognised for its cream-coloured, finely crackled glaze and elaborate polychrome enamel and gold decorations, which became prominent export items during the Meiji period.

Moriage Satsuma ceramics are crafted from earthenware clay finished with a clear crackle glaze. The moriage technique involves applying raised, three-dimensional slip trailing and heavy enamel work onto the ceramic surface before gilding with gold leaf or liquid gold accents.

Authentic Meiji period pieces typically feature dense, hand-painted details, heavy application of gold gilding, complex figures such as arhats or landscapes, and characteristic micro-crackle glazes. Many authentic items bear maker marks or signatures on the base in gold or red enamel.

Satsuma vases work well as focal decorative accents on sideboards, mantelpieces, or inside styled glass cabinets. Their detailed gilding and dark blue backgrounds complement rich wood tones, dark academia paint schemes, or modern maximalist spaces.

Gilt Satsuma pottery should be dusted gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a delicate brush. Water, liquid cleansers, and abrasive materials must be avoided, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and friction can rub away delicate surface gilding.
