Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, allowing for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

These clocks are traditionally constructed from hardwood timbers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring brass movements, dials, and glass viewing panels.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the dovetail joints, the aging of the timber and brass, the consistency of the movements components, and maker signatures on the dial.

A longcase clock serves as a strong vertical focal point and works well positioned in hallways, landings, or traditional living rooms to add architectural presence and traditional character.

Maintenance involves professional servicing every few years, keeping the movement clean and oiled, ensuring the case stands on a level surface, and avoiding placement in direct sunlight or areas with temperature fluctuations.
