Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A japanned cabinet on stand is a European storage piece created primarily during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to imitate East Asian lacquerwork using resin-based varnishes. These cabinets feature gilded decorations depicting landscapes or figures and are raised on carved or cabriole-legged wooden stands.

These cabinets typically consist of a timber carcass coated in multiple layers of resin-based varnish, decorated with gold leaf or metallic powders. They are fitted with engraved gilt-brass strapwork, corner plates, and central escutcheon plates, usually supported by a walnut, mahogany, or gilded softwood stand.

Authentic eighteenth-century japanned pieces show characteristic fine surface craquelure and genuine age-related oxidisation around metal fittings. Hand-engraved brass mounts, period-correct dovetail joinery in internal drawers, and subtle unevenness in the hand-applied gesso base layer distinguish period originals from later reproductions.

Position the cabinet as a focal point against a neutral or rich jewel-toned wall in a hallway, drawing room, or dining space. Maintain clear space around the piece to highlight its silhouette, pairing it with subtle contemporary lighting to accentuate the metallic details.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and sudden humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking or lifting of the lacquer layer. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding commercial polishes, solvents, or water, which cause permanent damage to the varnish.
