West-minster Chime, Mahogany Wall Clock

1900 - 1920
Sold 1 April 2025 · Masons Antiques
This “West-minster Chime, Mahogany Wall Clock” found a buyer.

It was listed by Masons Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Normally seen in oak cases, this unusual example is a welcome variation as it is in a mahogany case. It is beautifully polished and contrasts superbly with the silvered dial. The whole clock is in excellent condition and ready to go straight to work.

The silvered dial, with brass surround, has black Arabic numerals and is as clean as a new pin.

The 8 day movement strikes on the quarters and the hour, playing the Westminster-Chime tune. Importantly it strikes on rods and gives a very clear, resonating tone that is beautifully in tune. It is fitted with a STRIKE/SILENT facility. The movement has just been fully overhauled by our 9th generation horologist and carries our usual 12mths full parts and labour guarantee.

A very smart, very clean, quite unusual clock.

All cards accepted.

Chiming wall clocks gained popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries, often featuring mechanical movements that played melodic chimes on the quarter-hour.

Traditional wall clocks are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring brass clock faces, glass panels, and steel or brass internal mechanical components.

Authentic period clocks usually feature mechanical spring-driven or weight-driven movements with hand-painted or metal dials, visible maker marks, and traditional joinery rather than modern quartz mechanisms.

A wooden wall clock serves as a functional focal point and works well when mounted centrally on a plain wall, complementing both traditional and transitional interior schemes.

Mechanical clocks require regular winding, periodic professional oiling and servicing of the gear train, and placement away from direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
