Oversized Desk Compendium

19th century
For Sale by Chalfont Clocks
Description

A desk compendium of unusually large size. This eight day clock, barometer and thermometer housed in a nickel and gilt case and mounted on a black marble base is of exceptional quality and imposing size. The crisp white enamel clock dial is marked Henri Marc, Paris.

The clock movement is regulated by a platform cylinder mounted on an arched back plate with fine blued steel spade hands, housed behind a moulded silvered bezel and a frosted gilt oval mask engraved with symmetrical foliate designs to upper and lower margins, set within an oval moulded nickel finish case with bevel-glazed gilt cavetto moulded front and push-on rear cover mounted next to a matching aneroid barometer with the thermometer joining the two ovals.

The nickel finish to this clock makes it an unusual example as does it’s size (see last picture side by side with a more usual example).

Henry Marc is noted in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS Their history and development as probably a retailer of various mantel and other small clocks and refers to a relatively early carriage clock (number 26886) supplied to Marc by Japy Freres.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A desk compendium is a multi-functional tabletop instrument, typically combining a clock, barometer, and thermometer within a unified metal or wooden casing designed for an executive desk or library setting during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Victorian desk compendiums were constructed using gilt or lacquered brass, silvered metal, white enamel dials, glass bezels, and mercury or spirit thermometer tubes, frequently mounted on slate, marble, or polished hardwood bases.

Authentic pieces feature hand-engraved dial details, heavy cast or turned metalwork, mercury thermometer tubes with Fahrenheit or Centigrade scales, and period movement makers marks stamped on the clock mechanism or dial face.

Place the instrument on a dark wood study desk, modern console table, or bookshelf alongside leather-bound books and metal desk accessories to create a functional focal point.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth, clean glass bezels with glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly, and avoid using abrasive polishes on lacquered brass or engraved silvered dials.
