This French Directoire period portico clock belongs to the late 18th century and is designed in the architectural style of 1795 to 1799. The construction pairs white marble with cast ormolu fittings, creating a contrast between the pale stone and the bright gold-toned metal mounts. The structure is supported by classical round columns on square pedestals, topped by a triangular pediment decorated with twin swans facing a central urn. A convex white enamel dial bearing Roman numerals sits centrally, framed by a beaded ormolu roundel with blued steel hands, suspended above a pierced gilt frieze of drapery, mythological creatures, and floral garlands. Below the dial hangs an openwork sunburst pendulum centred by a mask motif. The base stands on four spherical brass feet and displays urn-shaped finials on the upper corners alongside small recumbent animal mounts on the lintel. The entire piece measures 44.5 cm high, 24 cm wide, and 10.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this clock functions as a striking mantelpiece ornament suitable for a traditional drawing room, study, or hallway mantel. The architectural silhouette and gilt ornamentation suit formal interior spaces, placed centrally on a mantel shelf or a console table where the hanging sunburst pendulum remains fully visible. The weight of the stone body ensures stability on flat surfaces, while the functional eight-day movement provides both timekeeping and hourly strikes. The clean white marble surfaces require minimal maintenance beyond regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth, preserving the gilt finish and the integrity of the enamel dial.

Directoire style clocks originated in late 18th-century France, bridging Louis XVI Neoclassicism and the Empire period, characterised by restrained classical architecture, symmetrical columns, and minimal gilt metal mounts.

These clocks typically feature solid white or dark marble, fire-gilded bronze mounts (ormolu), and enamel dials with hand-painted numerals and mechanical brass movements.

Authentic examples feature mercury-gilded bronze components, hand-cut gear teeth, early silk-thread pendulum suspensions, and period-correct maker marks stamped on the backplate or movement.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, marble-topped sideboard, or console table to serve as an architectural focal point in traditional or modern settings.

Dust surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid liquid polish or abrasives on gilt bronze to preserve the gilding, and have the movement serviced by a professional horologist every five years.
