Description

A magnificent and very rare antique Victorian satinwood display cabinet, beautifully made from inlaid satin wood. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880-1890 period.

The quality is exceptional, one of the absolute best we have ever come across. There is amazing carving throughout, including the top central motif, four beautiful fluted Corinthian column supports and various other intricate carved areas. There is wonderful inlay across the top frieze and lower drawers, the drawers have stunning and very high quality brass handles. This even retains the four carved satin wood urns on each upper corner. There are two heavy glass shelves inside, and the lining looks original, it is in lovely condition with just some minor wear.

Overall this is in excellent condition for its age, with only some minor wear to be seen. There are one or two tiny areas of moulded carving that are missing here and there, barely noticeable at all.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Victorian display cabinets emerged during the 19th century as expanding middle classes sought to exhibit porcelain, curiosities, and decorative objects in their drawing rooms.

Cabinet makers typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany or satinwood, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, delicate wood inlays, and glazed timber frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction hallmarks such as hand-blown or cylinder glass panes, aged timber patination, traditional joinery, and period-appropriate brass hardware.

Pairing dark or figured wood cabinets with minimalist modern surroundings creates a striking contrast, while internal lighting can highlight curated collections of ceramics or glassware.

Protect antique timber by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood surface.
