FAQs

Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita and shipped from the port of Imari. It gained international prominence during the Edo period, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it was heavily exported to European markets.

Imari pieces are crafted from fine-grained white clay and fired at high temperatures to create durable porcelain. They are traditionally characterised by an underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, complemented by gilt accents and occasional touches of green, yellow, or black.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, a characteristic weight and ring of high-fired porcelain, and characteristic glaze pooling on the base. Examination under magnification often reveals age-related wear, kiln stilt marks, and hand-applied enamels.

Antique Imari vases can be incorporated into contemporary interiors as statement decorative accents on sideboards, mantels, or open shelving. Their vibrant palette pairs well with neutral backgrounds, adding a layer of historical texture and artisanal craftsmanship to the space.

Antique porcelain should be cleaned gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent when necessary, avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals. It is important to handle pieces with clean hands and protect overglaze gilding and enamels from friction and moisture.
