FAQs

Breton furniture originates from the Brittany region of France, gaining significant popularity during the 19th century. It is traditionally characterised by heavy regional carving, often depicting folklore scenes, figures, and traditional motifs.

These items are typically constructed from solid regional hardwoods such as oak or chestnut. Traditional joinery techniques include pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved panels, and turned structural pillars.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination of the wood, tool marks left by hand-carving, traditional joinery methods, and the quality of the timber. Hand-forged hardware and irregular grain patterns further indicate age.

Pairing heavy carved wood with minimalist surroundings creates a striking contrast. It can be used as a functional bedside or side table to add warmth, texture, and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax periodically to nourish the wood.
