Description

This highly sought-after and rare eight-day single fusee drumhead clock is a remarkable example of the craftsmanship of the celebrated English clockmaker, James McCabe of the Royal Exchange, London. The clock is housed in a 17-inch mahogany drumhead case, featuring two inspection hatches—one on the side and one on the base—both operated with the same key. Additionally, a larger key is included to unlock the brass bezel, which encloses a stunning painted dial in excellent condition. The dial is marked with the name “James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London” at the center, further elevating its historical significance.

James McCabe, born in Lurgan, Ireland, in 1748, was part of a family already immersed in the clockmaking trade. After emigrating to London in 1775, McCabe established his business on Fleet Street and later moved to the Royal Exchange in 1802. By the time of his death in 1811, McCabe’s firm was recognized for its exceptional quality. His legacy continued under the stewardship of his sons, who carried on the business until its closure in 1883, marking the end of over 100 years of prestigious craftsmanship.

McCabe’s clocks were renowned worldwide, especially in India, where his timepieces were held in the highest esteem. Notably, examples of his work were owned by notable figures such as Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and American President George Washington.

This particular clock exemplifies the finest of McCabe’s work, with its meticulously crafted chain-driven movement, elegant blue steel hands, and the overall quality that defines his best products. James McCabe’s name is synonymous with excellence, and this rare clock is a true collector’s piece, offering both historical significance and extraordinary craftsmanship.

A drumhead wall clock features a circular wooden case resembling the shape of a drum, typically housing a mechanical movement designed to be mounted flush against a wall.

Traditional construction involves a solid timber case, most commonly mahogany or oak, fitted with a brass bezel, a painted enamel or metal dial, and protective glass.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-painted dial, the quality of the mechanical movement, hallmarks or signature lettering, and the natural patination on the timber case.

Mounting the piece as a focal point on a neutral wall allows the rich wood tones and historical craftsmanship to contrast effectively with contemporary minimalist decor.

Preservation requires keeping the timepiece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, alongside periodic mechanical servicing by a professional horologist.
