A Fine Quality Mahogany Bracket / Mantel Clock by John Durden, 27 Fenchurch Street, London, C.1870

19th century
Description

A high quality eight day mahogany bracket clock of compact dimensions, by John Durden, 27 Fenchurch Street, London.

The high quality case veneered in beautifully figured fiddle back mahogany, inlaid throughout with brass stringing, with ebonised mouldings and ebonised bun feet.

The elegant Chinese pagoda style top with brass inlays, surmounted by the original gilded urn finial. Cast brass silk lined fishscale frets to the sides.

The square brass dial with a finely fretted and gilded filigree mask, with a circular white enamelled dial centre, signed to the centre J Durden 27 Fenchurch Street. The whole dial surrounded by a silvered cast brass frame.

The fully restored high quality chain driven twin fusee movement of eight day duration, united by five knopped pillars, with the original anchor escapement and striking the hours and half hour on a curled blued steel gong. Heavy brass bob pendulum, with London style rating adjustment and knurled thumbscrew pendulum restraint.

The internal movement has been fully cleaned, we have retained the original lacquering and plate decoration to the movement back plate and pendulum.

Beautiful blued steel hands of spade design.

An elegant, well proportioned original clock with a wonderfully figured mahogany case of excellent colour and patination.

All of our clock movements are restored by our horologist who works exclusively for us.

Our horologist is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI), having 35 years of full time professional engagement in the repair & restoration of clocks, watches, music boxes & barometers. He was the recipient of the 1977 Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Bronze Medal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
