Satsuma ware is a distinctive style of Japanese earthenware pottery that originated in the Satsuma province during the sixteenth century. By the late nineteenth century, export Satsuma ceramics were characterised by cream-coloured crackle glazes decorated with intricate polychrome enamels and gold leaf.

Satsuma ceramics were crafted from earthenware clay fired at low temperatures to produce a porous cream body. The exterior features a micro-crackled clear glaze adorned with mineral enamels, raised paintwork, and applied gold leaf or paint.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit a fine, uniform crackle glaze beneath detailed polychrome enamelling and fine gilding. Many authentic export examples bear a makers mark or the Shimazu family crest, which resembles a cross inside a circle, on the base.
