This earthenware vase originates from the Meiji period around 1880, executed in the traditional Satsuma style. The body displays a cream crackle glaze background covered with hand-painted figural panel decoration depicting courtiers and samurai in tones of red, blue, and black. Gilt ornamentation and gold highlights accent the design, paired with bamboo-shaped handles. Age-related wear appears on the handles and rims, where the finish is tired and distressed, and the piece carries no maker marks. Measuring 40 cm high, 24 cm wide, and 24 cm deep, the item functions as a decorative vessel for a gentleman's library. Placed on a sideboard top, it provides a colourful focal point in a traditional interior setting.

Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of southern Kyushu during the late sixteenth century. By the Meiji period, production expanded significantly to cater to Western trade, featuring intricate hand-painted enamels, gilding, and figurative compositions.

Satsuma ceramics are formed from low-fired earthenware featuring a ivory-toned glaze with fine surface crackle. Decoration is applied using multi-coloured overglaze enamels and gold leaf or paint, often featuring relief detailing.

Authentic pieces display a distinct yellowish or cream ground with uniform micro-crackling throughout the glaze. Look for hand-painted detail in the enamel work, detailed gold ornamentation, and historic maker marks or signatures on the base.

These decorative vessels function well as statement pieces on sideboards, mantelpieces, or inside display cabinets. The rich polychrome palette and gilded accents complement both traditional interiors and minimalist contemporary schemes.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry brush. Avoid submerging earthenware in water or using abrasive liquid cleansers, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and damage overglaze gilding.
