Description

A stunning antique Victorian burr walnut pier cabinet, with a wonderful original colour & lots of character. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

The quality is excellent, this has gorgeous burr walnut grain patterns, a concave top front edge, lovely satin wood inlay and high quality gilt bronze ormolu mounts. The door has a brass grill front with a fabric backing, the interior is also fabric lined with two glass shelves.

We have given this a gentle clean and wax polish, it is in very good overall condition with just the right amount of wear and patina to be expected of a piece this age.

A pier cabinet is a low display cabinet traditionally designed to fit against the narrow section of wall between two windows, known as the pier, and became popular during the Victorian era for displaying decorative porcelain and curiosities.

These cabinets are typically constructed using a softwood carcass veneered with highly figured burr walnut, often enhanced with boxwood and ebony marquetry inlay, gilt bronze or brass mounts, and a single glazed door.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional shellac French polish finishes, hand-cast brass or gilt mounts, and timber shrinkage consistent with nineteenth-century age.

This piece functions effectively as an accent storage unit in a living room or hallway, providing surface space for lamps or sculptures while contrasting against neutral modern walls.

Maintain wood moisture levels by keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and clean the surface periodically using a soft, dry cloth without applying modern silicone-based polishes.
